In the heart of Montpelier, Bristol, there's a magical and unexpected hazel woodland. The client wanted to feel as though she had stepped into the countryside, so the design pairs a wildflower meadow with meandering paths through the trees.
It's now home to rare bird's-nest orchids, hedgehogs and many invertebrates rarely found in the city. When the garden opened for a National Garden Scheme open day, Bill Markham, producer of BBC Secret Garden, gave a talk there on wildlife-friendly planting.
It shows what happens when a garden is designed as a living system: it becomes somewhere to escape to, right in the middle of the city, and it gets richer with every season.
